Make Your Mark

SKYDIVE - VICKY's Story

I did it! I actually leapt out of a plane at 13,000ft and hurtled to the ground at 120mph! After the initial 8,000ft freefall, the final 5,000ft with the parachute seemed like a breeze!

By the time I jumped, it was dusk and the view was truly beautiful. The sun over the white clouds and the almost full moon shining brightly almost took my breath away.

It wasn't long after that that my breath really was taken away. I jumped out of the plane strapped to a calming bloke called Simon who looked after me fantastically, despite my forgetting everything I was told to do with my arms and legs and probably injuring him significantly in the process! The breathing - or rather lack of - did panic me somewhat, but the memory of the instructor earlier in the day saying, 'You can't suffocate in 45 seconds anyway, so don't worry!' helped a lot. I did manage to at least attempt to smile at the cameraman that jumped with us. Once the parachute was released, we could appreciate the awesome views and play about with the steering, and all memory of fighting for breath was gone.

Within just a couple of minutes, we had a successful landing and all was well with the world. My daughter, Hannah, ran up with one of the biggest hugs she's ever given me and my young son Toby spent the next ten minutes saying, 'You did it! Airpane, Mummy did it!.'

I could have spent hours floating down on that parachute. It was a shame that bit ended so fast. Can't say I'll miss the free falling though! But if there's ever a next time, maybe I could get the breathing right...?
